"We have thoroughly enjoyed our stay here in this gorgeous and leafy courtyard boutique hotel. The staff here is incredibly helpful and makes us feel very welcomed. The rooftop area is a lovely spot to hang out, especially after a long day of exploring Beijing. Breakfast food is one of the best hotel food we have ever tasted, a perfect mix between Beijing and western style. There is a great little dumpling restaurant just across the hotel which satisfy our craving for yummy noodles and juicy dumplings. We so wish we can stay for the whole week here! If we ever come back to Beijing, this would be the only hotel we would go back to, we are very fond of this hotel! Thank you for looking after us :)"

"Fabulous, I really enjoyed my short stay there, I wish I could have stayed longer and will definately return. From the minute I stepped through the door, even though it was 2.45 am as my fllight was delayed, the staff were very welcoming, friendly and helpful, even though they should have gone off duty at 1 am! The hostel had a great atmosphere, homely and friendly, this reflected the staff, who all got on very well together and between them, they were very knowledgeable. As a new solo travelller I really appreciated the friendly, informal but professional atmosphere. Even though the lounge/dining area was ,compact, it was cosy and it managed to accommodate everyone who wanted to be there as, most of the guests where out being tourists. Or there was ample space in a cafe, next door and connected to the hostel via a corridor., again a great design, creative and relaxing in design with a tree in it's midst, much nicer than the picture with great food and drinks. All this in the midlst of a buzzling lively conurbation of small streets and typical tourists shops, eateries and bars with a beautiful relaxing man made lake in easy walking distance, not to be missed, I say!"

"This accommodation is in a good location. Not too far form the airport and you can walk to the lake near by. It's accessible on foot to a subway station. Staff were friendly and helpful, although it is easier if you can speak Mandarin or have someone who can with you. However, by the nature of how nice the staff were to me who can't speak Mandarin, I am sure if necessary they will try to help you somehow. This place was enough for a minimalist like me who traveled alone. "

"Green Tree Inn Beijing Olympic Village Hotel has a well-lighted spacious lobby and clean rooms with good amenities. We had a hard time communicating with the hotel staff since they can't understand English very well. Inspite of this language barrier, they were very courteous and really tried to communicate with us. They even gave a complimentary city map.The hotel is located far from the nearest bus stop or subway train stop. One time when we couldn't get a taxi, we had to walk a long way back to the hotel. But it's a good place to stay if you have a car. There was a very good food selection at the restaurant and the food was great tasting."

"Some said this hotel is hard to find, but I think was easy on foot and with map of the area. Street is quite small, so most taxis don't like to drive here and to get taxi, must walk to main street, but it is not too far. Staff was friendly. Hotel is quite small, looks nice. But rooms/bathrooms very small, and winter time cold, must have air con heating all time. Often also come bad smell from sewers. Also doors/windows are very thin so not much privacy in room, can hear everything what is going on at hotel. Hou Hai lakes, Luogu Alley and drum/bell towers very near. So shopping and eating is easy."

"This is one of those hotels which do not permit foreigners to stay, but the hotel failed to put that on their Agoda listing. The staff did try to put me in a room instead of turning me away, but I think that has a lot to do with the fact that I spoke Chinese, and that I had already paid. Even then, my payment for a part of my stay was mysteriously refunded into my account, and I had to pay the hotel in cash and spent the next two days calling and emailing Agoda to figure out if I had been scammed (I did end up paying less than what I originally paid for that part of my stay though). My room was dark, small and smelled bad, but that's typical for the hutongs. The only redeeming qualities of this hotel are the price and the short walk to the hutong attractions."

In and around Back Lakes (Hou Hai)

More about Back Lakes (Hou Hai)

The dominant feature in Beijing’s Hou Hai district is the Back Lakes (or Hou Hai). This area has been an important part of Beijing for centuries, but recent redevelopments have given it a slick cosmopolitan veneer. Today, China’s successful business tycoons come here to work and play, so there are as many impressive business towers here as trendy nightclubs and up-market restaurants.

One of the most important office districts near the Back Lakes is China Zhi Gong Dang building. Farther from the lakes but still in the district are CYTS Tower and Beijing Poly Plaza. The latter is a striking building that houses office and retail space along with a selection of the most sought-after business hotels in Hou Hai. Impossible to miss, this building is an example of the spirited architectural style that has emerged in Hou Hai in the past few years.

While the Back Lakes attract local professionals and business travelers, this entire district is also a magnet for expatriates and foreign tourists, who come for the mix of old-world sightseeing attractions and cutting-edge commercial scene. The lakes themselves are appealing, and they’ve played an important transportation role in Beijing since the 1200s. Another important site in the area is Beijing Confucius Temple.

The best place for tourists to stay is in the accommodation near the Back Lakes, while some of the most convenient are located halfway between the lakes and Andingmen Subway Station. The bars and restaurants around the lakes are open until late, and it’s possible to hire a paddle boat and go out on the water long after the sun has set. The club scene on the lakes receives a boost from the student population of nearby Beijing Normal University.
