“Back for the 6th time!”
A shorter stay this time around as the older boy's schedule only permitted us to start our vacation just a few days before Christmas. We spent some time in Sapporo before taking the free shuttle over on Christmas day. We stayed 7 nights and this being our 6th season here, this review will focus more on what has changed from the last season. But firstly, what is great about this resort and keeps us coming back - the powder snow is even more awesome than last season as we are arriving later. We had also booked a total of 15 hours of snowboarding lessons with the incomparable, Mackenzie Spurgeon - snowboarding instructor par excellence. This was our 3rd season with him and my older boy loves him to bits. Not so great were our dining options - given that we were there between Christmas and New Year, the restaurants that accepted reservations were largely booked-out. So, we were restricted to those that did not, which meant we were either dining at Kakashi or Cricket. Which was fine as the food they serve is great. We also tried the Venison Burger from the food truck parked just outside the South Wing and the taste was just mind-blowing, especially with the wasabi sauce. They had new lockers which utilised the room keycard, making it much more convenient but the capacity was reduced. This presented a problem for us as we had 4 sets of Snowboards/Skis and boots, which could not fit in the locker. However, they were quick to provide us with one of their spare lockers, which was nice. The lines to take the ski lifts were long but we largely avoided it on days where we were taking lessons, as they had priority lanes for us. On other days, we just headed to the East Mountain, which had relatively shorter queues, especially if you start early, which meant taking the gondola over at or before 9am. We also found that it was preferably to schedule lunch at 11-1130am to avoid the crowds - otherwise, expect to spend time waiting for a table, and then queueing for food. Equipment rental prices went up but the cheaper Yen helped to offset it somewhat. Gone were the 'Welcome Vouchers', which helped to shave off up to 20% of the costs of dining on the ski slopes and retail purchases in the resort - somewhat expected as the tourist hordes have returned. Lift ticket prices also went up but the 25+5 hr deal remains a great option if you are staying at least a week or so. The relatively new Kotobuki-no-yu onsen remains a favourite of the boys and we usually ended the night with a visit to the Game Arcade. The resort continues to stretch their concept of "eco-cleaning" by only making up our rooms on every fourth day...which meant it happened only once during our stay. They also converted the large hall, where the Crayon Shinchan Ski School used to be housed, into a sort of party cum carnival venue, calling it Bon Odori. It was loud and kind of quirky but at least, they are trying to offer something new. All in all, we had a great time and would probably come back again next season for the wonderful snow, the familiarity and our beloved snowboarding instructor, Supermac!
